February 2015 – @star1] Kang Sora – Interview
After the end of “Misaeng”, you were asked in an interview what “Misaeng” meant to you and you cried.
It seems that I started crying suddenly
because I felt that I wouldn’t get to shoot this kind of project ever
again. Filming was hard, but when it was actually over, I felt so much
sadness. I don’t easily cry, but why did I cry then? I think I was being
a little bit too much (laugh).
The scene in the 1st episode of “Misaeng” where you wear butt pads was memorable. This scene wasn’t in the webtoon…
The identity of Ahn Young Yi doesn’t
really stand out in the webtoon. I think that’s why the script writer
wrote this butt pad selling scene to reveal early the strong personality
of Ahn Young Yi. To show how her as someone who doesn’t care about
which situation she’s in or which outfit she has to wear in order to
sell the products.
The Ahn Young Yi in the webtoom has short hair, but the one in the drama has long hair. Why didn’t you cut your hair?
To be honest, the webtoon’s Ahn Young Yi
is a character who is really influenced by her father. She should have
been a boy, but she was born a girl, so she always wore men clothes and
had short hair. However, before we started shooting the drama, the
director told me that the relationship between Ahn Young Yi and her
father would be settled, so she should have long hair. That’s why
there’s purposely a difference with the webtoon. She wore skirts and
didn’t cut her hair. When you see her like this, you get the feeling
that Ahn Young Yi frees herself from her father at some extent. She
couldn’t completely let go of him, though.
The fact you spoke English and Russian fluently became a hot issue. Are you really fluent in 4 languages?
This is something that was falsely
reported. I can’t speak fluently any foreign language. I’ve been to
awards ceremonies overseas like for the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards,
and I was sorry that I could only speak Korean in front of my foreign
fans. That’s why I just read along what was written in the script. I
would just read a Chinese transcription like “ttajahao”.
Choose the most memorable scene for you.
There are many scenes that are engraved
in my mind. Let me think about it a little. I think there are three.
There’s one emotional scene that was also in the webtoon. The scene
where Jang Geurae (Im Siwan) and Team Leader Oh (Lee Sung Min) are on
the rooftop and they say “we all have incomplete lives”. I really liked
the atmosphere and the setting. And then there’s the scene when Jang
Geurae invites Assistant Manager Kim to his house and they talk about
the past. I really enjoyed how this was the opportunity for them to grow
closer. The last scene would be when Team Leader Oh smiles and drinks
in front of his friend. It’s such a realistic and bitter scene.
If you were to hear sexist comments from your boss or you received unfair treatment?
First of all, I’d get a membership at a
boxing club (laugh). I think I’d do some muay thai or jiujitsu. And if
there were a complaint about me, I think I’d talk directly to the person
and settle the matter. I think I’d go and talk to this person first by
saying something like “sunbaenim, am I lacking about this? Do you worry
simply because I’m a woman?”.
Are you the mood maker when you’re at a bar?
When I’m not with a lot of people, I can
be. However, I really can’t drink alcohol, so instead of taking the lead
in creating the atmosphere, I’d ask the bar’s owner to make it
enjoyable. So I’m a semi-mood maker? (laugh)
Who were you the closest with on the set? In tvN “Taxi”, you seemed awkward with Jun Suk Ho who plays Assistant Manager Ha.
While we were filming, (Im) Siwan is the
one I was in contact the most with. Later on, I got closer with (Byun)
Yo Han and (Kang) Ha Neul. We actually have a chatroom. In the drama, I
don’t have a good relationship with Assistant Manager Ha, so it might be
why I couldn’t be close to him. I still don’t know his phone number.
If you were to date someone from One International, who would you want to be with?
It’s something that’s often brought up in
interviews. I would date Sales Team 3 Assistant Manager Kim (Kim Dae
Myung) and I would marry Steel Assistant Manager Kang (Oh Min Suk).
Assistant Manager Kim is passionate when he works, so I think he’d be
passionate when he dates. I think Assistant Manager Kang has a dual
charm. He’s a distant man when he’s at work, but he’s warm when he’s
with his family. Wouldn’t it be fun to marry him?
Are you seeing someone right now?
I am not. I really wanted to have a
boyfriend in the past, but I think this desire is disappearing. It might
be because I’m busy and exhausted. I want to stay at home and relax.
Going out is annoying. I haven’t been in a relationship for more than 2
years.
Tell us about your ideal type.
A man who is like a friend. I like a man
whom I can share my hobbies with and who is interesting even if he
doesn’t speak much. It already happened many times that I almost found
myself in a reversal situation because we were close like friends.
That’s why I can’t go on blind dates.
I read in an interview you did in
the past that you have the “1 chicken per person” motto and I thought
it sounded familiar. However, we don’t really know about the way you
stay fit. Tell us your secret to stay fit.
I still go by the “1 chicken per person”
motto. I reduced the size of the chicken, though. The barbecue chicken
is small. That’s how I can eat one all by myself. If you dip it in salt,
it tastes so good. And my secret to stay fit… To be honest, everyone
knows this method. I eat less and I exercise a lot.
Can you reveal your current weight?
Right now, it’s 48~49kg. If I eat a lot, it can go up to 50kg?
Isn’t restraining yourself hard? What do you think about to endure it?
I’ve been maintaining this figure for two
years, so it’s no longer as hard as it used to be. The most important
thing is not to neglect your body. When you gain 1kg, it’s easy to lose.
However, if you gain 4kg, it’s harder to lose. That’s why you must lose
when you put on a little bit of weight.
You said you couldn’t eat like you wanted to while you were filming, what is the thing you wanted to eat the most?
Everything. I really wanted to go to a buffet. That’s why I went to a buffet once the drama was over and I ate a lot.
Do you have your own “buffet eating” rule?
First of all, a buffet display various
kinds of food. What’s important is to eat as much as you can. You can
never eat just one dish and get up. If you get up, your stomach feels
full. You must put various dishes on your plate and eat.
I thought you had a little brother or an older brother. I was surprised to find out you were an only child.
I was raised like any child. I went out
to read manhwas or watch movies on my own. I didn’t feel lonely per se,
but I kept asking my parents to buy me a little sister/brother until
Christmas in middle school. Once I started high school, I stopped asking
for it and I was fine with the situation. Now, when I look at my
friends getting married, they have their older sisters or brothers with
them and I’m jealous. It’s so nice to see my friends who can complain to
and rely on their older brother or sister.
In the movie “Sunny” or in SBS
sitcom “Ugly Alert”, you play a character who protects others. I think
playing such charismatic women really suits you.
I like taking care of people in real life
too. A lot of my friends are short, so I actually enjoy this “perfect
fit” feeling I get when we hold each other’s shoulders. I think people
often say that about me because my usual image comes out naturally in my
acting.
In the sixth episode of SBS
“Doctor Stranger”, the scene where you touch Lee Jong Suk’s hair in a
protective way left a big impression.
The script didn’t say “she lifts his
head”, but as I wondered if he was hurting, my hand naturally went to
his hair. I have big hands and Lee Jong Suk has a small head, so it fit
right in.
It might be because of this image, but I feel like you have more female fans.
98% of my fans are women. I did a
fanmeeting 2 years ago and 190 people out of the 200 there were women.
It’s to the point that the men you find are either husbands who follow
their wives or fathers who come with their daugthers?
I’m curious to hear about your personality.
First of all, I’m quick and I hate things
that drag on for no reason or are delayed. I’m the type to waste no
time even when I make an appointment with my friends. I’m like what you
see right now.
You’re still in contact with the
fellow actresses you worked with in “Sunny”. The comment written on the
SNS of Chun Woo Hee who won the best actress award at the Blue Dragon
film Awards was heartwarming.
We definitely must see each other, but
the timing is never right. Our schedules never match! We definitely must
see each other soon. And I keep in touch with (Shim) Eun Kyung and also
other friends.
When you were in middle school,
you published a martial arts novel. When you were in high school, you
also wrote for your theater class. Now, you’re an actress, but do you
still write?
I don’t have the courage to write right
now. As someone who reads scenarios, I’ll never write them. And there’s
also the pressure to complete the work, so even if someone would tell me
to write, I would never be able to do it right now.
You revealed that you were a “webtoon” mania. Do you still read a lot these days?
Of course. I already knew about
“Misaeng”, so when I was offered a role, I totally snatched it. I’m
currently reading “Heart’s sound” by Jo Suk. I also enjoyed reading
“Will You Marry Me?” by MindC and “Lessa” by POGO. I also have the book
of “With God” by Joo Ho Min.
“4th Period Mystery” was your first movie.
I took the audition and I went to the set
the very next day. I think I shot this movie with a positive mindset
without knowing any struggle and without feeling any pressure. I learned
a lot from (Yoo) Seung Ho.
What did you learn from him?
(Yoo) Seung Ho had such an amazing
behavior on the set. He was really mature for his age and he showed
great manners. It wasn’t just about his attitude toward acting, he was
also great when the camera was off. I learned many things.
After “We Got Married”, you didn’t shoot any other variety program. Is there a variety program you’d like to join?
I’m still not confident about doing
variety programs. I’m not a funny person. I might enjoy enjoy watching
variety programs, but filming scares me. I watch a lot of the recent
variety programs or MBC “Infinity Challenge”. Food variety program would
be hard to watch, so I don’t really watch them.
I saw you in tvN “Taxi” and your variety program sense was unique. Do you also check out internet communities?
I read a lot of articles comments, but I
don’t check one specific online community. I’ve visited a fancafé once
after looking up my name.
What’s your usual fashion style? Do you enjoy the office look?
I like the comfortable and natural
fashion style. I don’t wear clothes I don’t feel comfortable in. I like
wearing slacks or jackets.
You must choose your next project, which kind of project do you want to shoot?
This time, I want to play a bright character.
Do you have a role model?
I have so many role models. I watch
something and I think this person is awesome, how can this one act like
this or like that. I think there are so many great actors.
Do you have a word to the women who are currently going through a diet?
I hope you don’t do a flash diet. I
recommend to eat well and exercise on a regular basis. In my case, I
must go on a diet to look good on screen, though. Korean women are
really thin. I hope you won’t do diets that will make you unhealthy. And
check your weight only once a week because our weight changes a couple
of times even within the same day.
